In 2006 Morocco took the lead among other Islamic countries in promoting the rights of women and gender equity. Morocco's move to enforce laws for women is unseen in the Arab / Muslim world. The Moroccan Government is working to improve violence against women. Sexual harassment is now a criminal act in Morocco and there are programs all over Morocco helping illiterate women become educated.
These are some of the new family laws that have been enforced in Morocco since 2006 to help protect the women of Morocco. In major cities throughout Morocco the family is now under joint responsibility of husband and wife. The minimum age of marriage for both men and women is 18, (it used to be 15 for women.) Husband and wife are both eligible to seek divorcee and women have a choice to wear the burka or not.
Moroccan Law is based on Islamic Sharia which has left women in vulnerable and life threatening positions. With this change women will now have a choice, property and financial benefits and freedom from oppression. Morocco has taken positive steps in promoting the protection of Muslim women. Hopefully this step will prompt other Islamic countries to enforce laws to protect women.
As a women from Australia, I feel blessed to have freedom of choice; any dreams or goals can be achieved. I am surrounded by friends, family and a partner who are encouraging and supportive. My hope is that countries all over the world will make sure that their women are protected and given every opportunity to be the best they can be.
